Sad Surrey suffer Essex hammering
C&G Trophy, Chelmsford: Essex 131-4 beat Surrey 128 all out by six wickets
Essex recorded their sixth win in the C&G Trophy competition with a six-wicket win over lowly Surrey.
Surrey were all out for 128 after 39 overs after being put in to bat by Essex at Chelmsford.
They got off to a torrid start when opener James Benning was out first ball, nicking an Andy Bichel delivery to wicket-keeper James Foster.
Mark Pettini gave Essex a rapid start with a half-century in a mere 19 balls, featuring 10 fours and a six.
He gathered 26 from two overs sent down by Neil Saker and when he was replaced by Tim Murtagh, Pettini hammered him for five successive fours to complete his fifty.
Essex reached the target in the 16th over although they wobbled when Jade Dernbach snatched 3-36.
Darren Gough was pushed up the order and he hit 20 off 20 balls before becoming Dernbach's final victim.
Foster ended the match in style with a hooked six off Saker.
