In-form Sussex pair better Surrey

C&G Trophy, The Oval: Sussex 274-5 (48.2 overs) beat Surrey 272-9 (50 overs) by 5 wickets

Murray Goodwin Mike Yardy and Murray Goodwin carried their Championship form into the C&G Trophy as Sussex beat Surrey by five wickets at The Oval.

The pair put on 156 for the fourth wicket as Sussex overhauled Surrey's 272-9 with 10 balls to spare.

Goodwin was out for 89 off 107 balls but Yardy finished on 98 not out, his highest score in one-day cricket.

Surrey opener James Benning plundered 47 from 29 balls early on and Jon Batty and Mark Butcher followed with fifties.

In the first Championship match of the season Yardy and Goodwin put on a club record 385 against Warwickshire.

Yardy was only denied a century when Robin Martin-Jenkins hit the winning runs.

Surrey were hampered by the loss of Rikki Clarke, with a suspected shin injury, from the attack as he bowled only three overs.
