Rain stalls S Africa victory bid

South Africa's hopes of a three-day win in the first Test over Bangladesh were scuppered by rain as only 19.2 overs were played on Friday in Bloemfontein.

The tourists lost two further wickets in that time, to reach 67-3 following on, still 221 runs behind South Africa.

Junaid Siddique batted 100 minutes for 27 as Bangladesh showed more resolve than in their first innings.

The forecast for Saturday is much better, so South Africa will expect to wrap up the contest on the fourth day.

Siddique, the 21-year-old left-hander, was eventually removed by Jacques Kallis, playing loosely outside off-stump to edge to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher.

Boucher also took a catch to dismiss opener Tamim Iqbal, who hit 20 from 49 balls before flailing at a very wide, short delivery from Makhaya Ntini.

South Africa were without Paul Harris, who is out for at least three weeks after fracturing his left thumb during the match.

The spinner should, however, be fit in time to play a full role in the Test series against Australia which starts in mid-December.

Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim was reprimanded for showing dissent when dismissed in the first innings.
