Inquiry halts Cornish relegation

Cricket

Grampound Road might still play in Cornwall cricket's top flight despite finishing bottom of the table.

The club are appealing against St Austell's decision to postpone their match on Bank Holiday Monday because of a wet pitch.

Newquay, who finished second from bottom, also had their game with St Just called off on the same day.

As it stands Grampound are bottom of the table and will be relegated if their appeal fails.

Grampound claim the pitch at St Austell was playable, and the two other games in the league did go ahead that day.

At the same time the Cornish Cricket League is investigating the reasons behind Newquay calling off their match at home to the champions.

As the table is decided on average points, in theory a loss for Newquay coupled with a win for Grampound could have seen the two teams swap places.

As it stands the two sides are separated by 0.23 points, meaning that Grampound would have needed to get just four more points than Newquay over that weekend to stay up.

Back on the field champions St Just and runners-up Truro drew after their game was called off for bad light.

Truro made 214 for 6 while St Just were 145 for 6 with 11 overs remaining.

It means St Just end the season unbeaten.
