Cambs fight back to snatch draw

Cricket

Cambridgeshire came back from a slow start to their second innings to force a draw against Buckinghamshire in the Minor Counties Championship.

Cambs eventually declared on the third day on 308 for 8, and Bucks failed to reach a total of 258 needed to win.

Simon Kellett was the star for Cambs by making a century in his second innings.

He said: "I'll get the glory, but the guys I batted with - Freear came out with a really bad injury and got 48 - probably saved us the game as well."

Cambridgeshire also did their best to limit Buckinghamshire's batsmen on their own wicket, with young seamers James Williams, Mark Nunn and Jamie Smith impressing with the ball.

"They're all young lads, they're all still learning, they all bowl with good pace, they all swing it out," Kellett told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"Their future is in their hands...I was speaking to Keith Medlycott [ex-England international] and he said they're the best young seamers he's seen for while"

Cambridgeshire are next in action against Lincolnshire in two weeks time and Kellet believes they'll be sticking broadly with the same young side.

"Matthew Pateman has got to work, but that coincides with Nick Ferraby being available," he said.

"Another pro in there might make a little bit of a difference, but if it hadn't been for that it might have been the same team."
