India captain given six-match ban

Sourav Ganguly India captain Sourav Ganguly has been banned for the next six one-day games following his team's repeated slow over-rate in the Pakistan series.

Match referee Chris Broad made the decision after Pakistan's final-ball win in Ahmedabad, which squared the limited overs series at 2-2.

India took 236 minutes to bowl 48 overs against Pakistan, exceeding the allocated time limit by 26 minutes.

"No excuse was offered by the captain," said Broad.

After this series, India are scheduled to host Bangladesh then tour Zimbabwe in October.

Batsman Rahul Dravid will captain the team in his absence.

Ganguly, who has been under fire for poor batting form, was penalised 70% of his match fee for the same offence in last week's third one-day international.

The ban was in line with International Cricket Council guidlines for a Level 3 breach, which allows a ban of up to eight matches.

"This is the second match in succession that India has not bowled its overs within the required timeframe," said Broad.

"I made Mr Ganguly aware of the potential penalties at the previous hearing and it is unfortunate that this warning was not heeded."

In addition to the ban, Ganguly was fined 30% of his match fee, while the rest of the side were each given a 15% penalty.
