Diving pair bow out with silver

Tony Ally (l) Mark Shipman (r) Tony Ally and Mark Shipman grabbed silver for England in the men's 3m springboard final on Friday.

They sealed a tense tussle for second place with their final dive in their last competition before retiring.

Their points total of 423, however, was not enough to match the 444.87 of winning Canadian divers Alexandre Despatie and Miranda Arturo.

Australian Steven Barnett and Robert Newbery took bronze, just 1.65 points behind the English pairing.

An ecstatic Ally told BBC Sport: "It was a real tight competition all the way and, after what the Australians did with their last dive, the door was still open for us to win the silver.

"They opened the door and we walked right through it. It's fantastic."

Ally, 32, revealed the pair had been hopeful of gold particularly after their opening dive put them clear of their Canadian and Australian rivals.

But he insisted he was "delighted" to take second spot in front of a very vocal group of England supporters.

Shipman added: "The last of our six dives is one of one of our favourites so it was something of a banker for us. But we had to nail it."
