Arthur to fight for British crown

Jamie Arthur

Welsh boxer Jamie Arthur will challenge for the British featherweight title after a points victory in an eliminator against Akaash Bhatia at the York Hall.

The Cwmbran man, 29, scored a one-point win over previously unbeaten Bhatia.

Former Commonwealth Games gold winner Arthur extended his record to 15 wins (four knock-outs) and two defeats, and is unbeaten since his 2008 comeback.

The Aberdeen-born fighter retired in 2005 after successive stoppage defeats, but has six victories since returning.

Arthur, now promoted by Frank Maloney, hit the headlines in Manchester in 2002.

How far can Jamie Arthur's career progress?

Campaigning at lightweight, he became the first Welshman to win Commonwealth Games gold since Howard Winstone in 1958.

Arthur struggled to adapt his style to the professional game, but the 10-round victory over 26-year-old Londoner Bhatia is one of his most impressive.

'Kash the Bash', the first professional British Sikh boxer, had won all 14 of his previous bouts since turning professional in 2006.

Belfast's Martin Lindsay is the reigning British featherweight champion, following his stoppage win over Paul Appleby in April.
