Pacquiao win tops 1m TV viewers

Oscar de la Hoya and Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao's defeat of Oscar de la Hoya was one of the most-watched non-heavyweight fights, drawing more than 1.25m pay-per-view TV subscribers.

Figures from United States broadcaster HBO show it was only the fourth time subscribers have topped a million for a fight outside the heavyweight division.

De la Hoya, who did not come out of his corner after the eighth round on Saturday, has featured in all of them.

The latest is this year's most popular pay-per-view event, generating £47m.

The MGM Grand Garden also announced an attendance of just over 15,000, meaning the venue was almost at capacity on Saturday.

Considered the top pound-for-pound boxer in the world, Filipino Pacquiao (48-3-2, 36 knockouts) moved up two weight classes to fight former six-weight world champion De la Hoya at welterweight.

The one-sided bout was stopped after the eighth round when, with the fighter bruised and swollen, De la Hoya's corner threw in the towel.
