Hatton beyond help - Malignaggi

Paulie Malignaggi says Ricky Hatton is too set in his ways for trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr to make any difference ahead of their 22 November super-fight.

Hatton, 30, started working with Mayweather Sr earlier this month.

"Hatton has the mentality of a fighter who wants to be aggressive, to come forward," Malignaggi told BBC Sport.

"He's not all of a sudden going to be boxing me on the outside. I'll take over where Floyd Mayweather Jr left off. Ricky is going to lose - handily."

The 27-year-old Malignaggi faces Manchester's Hatton at the MGM Grand and the New Yorker claims to have spotted plenty of chinks in his rival's armour.

"I'm not going to say he's on the slide," said Malignaggi, whose only defeat in 26 fights came against then WBO light-welterweight champion Miguel Cotto in 2006.

"But I definitely saw some things that could be taken advantage of in the Juan Lazcano fight [Hatton won a unanimous decision in May] and I've seen them all through his career. He has consistent flaws."

Hatton split with previous trainer Billy Graham after his victory over Lazcano and says that Mayweather Sr, father of Floyd Mayweather Jr, who beat Hatton in Las Vegas last December, had given him a "new lease of life".

Mayweather Sr, who recently split with six-weight world champion Oscar de la Hoya to concentrate his efforts on Hatton, is confident he can make his new charge a "slicker, smarter fighter".

But Malignaggi believes his underdog tag and the experience gained from his clash with Cotto, who outpointed him in a hard-fought encounter, will give him an edge.

"Cotto is a very good fighter but I don't think I was in over my head and Hatton's not in the same league," said Malignaggi, who was recently forced to give up his IBF light-welterweight belt.

"The experience of being in a big-fight atmosphere and dealing with some of the pressures that can come in that situation helped me and will make a big difference in the Hatton fight.

"And any time people doubt me, it makes me focus better. I'm not expected to win the fight against Hatton, but I need to feel threatened. I'm at my best when I'm threatened."
