Amir Khan will face Martin Kristjansen on 5 April in an eliminator fight for a title shot at the WBO lightweight belt.
The pair had been scheduled to meet on 2 February, but illness forced Dane Kristjansen to withdraw, so Gairy St Clair was named as a late replacement.
Khan, undefeated in 16 bouts, will have the added advantage of boxing in front of his home crowd at the Bolton Arena.
"It has put Amir in the frame to fight for the world title, hopefully this year," said promoter Frank Warren.
Kristjansen, ranked as the world's number two lightweight by the WBO, has won 19 of his 23 previous fights.
But the 30-year-old faces a stern challenge against Khan, 21, who produced an accomplished points performance to beat former IBF super-featherweight champion St Clair two weeks ago.
Promoter Warren is currently exploring opportunities for Khan to succeed Naseem Hamed as the youngest British world champion of all time.
His ultimate fight would be Mexican Juan Diaz, who added the WBO lightweight title to his WBA and IBF belts after a technical knockout against Brazil's Acelino Freitas in April last year.
