Calzaghe targets two-weight glory

Joe Calzaghe Super-middleweight king Joe Calzaghe insists he is ready to step up a weight after his victory over WBA and WBC champion Mikkel Kessler in Cardiff.

The Welshman wants middleweight legend Bernard Hopkins as his next fight after his 21st title defence.

"I've always said throughout my career that I'd love to move up to light heavyweight and win the title at that weight," he told BBC Radio Wales.

"I've done everything at this weight, I've won all four belts."

Calzaghe, 35, stretched his unbeaten record to an incredible 44 fights against Kessler, who lost his treasured unblemished record at the Millennium Stadium.

He added: "Winning this fight secured my legacy as maybe the best super middleweight of all time. So much rested on this for me.

"I don't think there's anything to achieve now at super middleweight."

The Newbridge southpaw is already trying to entice modern American ring legends Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins into the ring with him at light-heavyweight.

"The first choice would be Bernard Hopkins because he's an excellent fighter and although he's getting on a bit now, he's still a well respected fighter in the States," he said.

" One thing we learned was that not only can Joe box; he can take a punch. That bodes well for the weight shift when he goes up "

Calzaghe's promoter Frank Warren said: "Joe will go to the States. He will fight Mr Hopkins in his home town. He will go to Philadelphia to fight him. He will fight him anywhere to get this on.

"Bernard Hopkins is a great fighter and a great athlete," added Warren.

"But go back and think of the great fighters, the Ray Leonards, the Tommy Hearns', the Marvin Haglers. They fought everybody. They didn't duck.

"If Bernard Hopkins is the warrior he says he is then make the fight, make that fight with Joe Calzaghe."

Calzaghe also told BBC Radio Wales Good Morning Wales programme he will not retire yet and laughed at suggestions of a knighthood.

"In a perfect world, it is probably right to retire, but I'm 36 in March and I've got a lot of fight left in me as I showed on the weekend," he said.

"I've still got a couple of goals to achieve.

"I've still got the burning desire to be a light-heavyweight champion and go down as a two-weight world champion and I'm going to do that in 2008.

"But 2008 will be the last year for me. I want to be one of the fighters who gets out at the top with everything in place and still looking pretty good."
