Brave Couch loses on points

Jane Couch and Lucia Rijker Britain's Jane Couch suffered a unanimous points defeat to classy Lucia Rijker in Los Angeles.

Fighting on the undercard of Lennox Lewis' WBC heavyweight title defence against Vitali Klitschko, Couch put on a brave performance to last the eight-round distance.

Rijker, rated one of the two best female boxers in the world, controlled the action from the first bell and bloodied Couch's nose.

The Bristol-based Couch enjoyed the odd moment of success but just did not have the punching power to threaten her Dutch opponent.

In other female boxing action, Laila Ali, daughter of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, remained undefeated in the ring after stopping Valerie Mahfood in the sixth round of their scheduled eight-round bout.
