Turkish star Kop handed life ban

Sureyya Ayhan Kop with trainer and husban Yucel Kop

Former European 1,500m champion Sureyya Ayhan Kop has been banned for life from athletics after failing a drugs test.

Traces of the steroids stanozolol and methandienone metabolites were found in a sample the athlete gave in 2007.

Kop, 31, had her lifetime ban reduced to four years by an independent tribunal but the life ban was reimposed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

It was the Turkish athlete's second doping offence as she had obstructed a test before the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Kop, who won the 2002 European title and finished second at the following year's World Championships, filed appeals with the CAS requesting the annulment of the tribunal's decision.

Her husband and coach Yucel Kop had his two-year suspension for negligence lifted because there was no evidence to say he had violated any disciplinary or anti-doping rule.
