Bolt guru Mills ends Jamaica role

Glen Mills and Usain Bolt

Usain Bolt's coach Glen Mills is to step down after 22 years in charge of the Jamaican athletics team.

Under Mills, the team has won 71 world championship and 33 Olympic medals. He will continue to coach sprint sensation Bolt, a role he took up in 2004.

He said: "There are a lot of coaches who are making their mark, and I think it's time for them to get a chance."

Mills will remain head coach of the Racers Track Club in Jamaica, where Bolt is a member.

Howard Aris, president of the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association, said he had been aware of Mills' plans to resign.

"I asked him to hold on a little longer," he admitted.

Mills took over as head coach in 1987 from Jamaica track legend Herb McKenley, who was one of the first two people from the Caribbean to win an Olympic medal.

Mills ran in high school but did not compete at international level.

Bolt, 23, is currently the world and Olympic champion and world record holder at both 100m and 200m.
