Kluft to compete at Grangemouth

Carolina Kluft

Olympic heptathlon champion Carolina Kluft will compete in the long jump as part of a guest team at the Bank of Scotland Cup in Grangemouth on 1 July.

The 25-year-old Swede has dominated heptathlon since 2003, but has decided not to defend her crown in Beijing.

Instead, she will challenge for the long and triple jump titles in China.

"It's going to be great to come back to Scotland. I got married here in September and we had a great time," said Kluft.

Scotland, Wales, and Ireland will field teams, alongside a USA junior team, a Bank of Scotland development team and guest competitors.

Kluft has lifted every major heptathlon title since winning the World Championship gold medal in 2003.

And the Swede hopes to use the event in Grangemouth to prepare for August's Olympics.

"Long jump is my main focus for China and my competition programme will reflect that," she said.

Scotland's captain will be British Universities 400m hurdles champion Eilidh Child, who is undefeated so far this season.

"It's good to get out and compete for Scotland," said Child.

"We don't get the opportunity all that often. The home advantage really helps too."

The Scots have won the meet for the last two years.
