Chambers given another NFL chance

By Simon Austin

Dwain Chambers Dwain Chambers' dream of becoming an American Footballer is still alive after he was selected for a two-day NFL Europe training camp next week.

Chambers, 28, impressed coaches during a trial in Cologne in November.

He had been waiting to hear if he was one of 80 players selected for a camp in Florida in March.

But the coaches were keen to have another look at Chambers and other "rookies", and set up the additional camp in Barcelona on 13 and 14 January.

Chambers is determined to pursue a career in American Football.

In December his agent, Cubie Seegobin, told BBC Sport that the former European 100m champion would not participate in the indoor athletics season and was unlikely to compete in the sport again.

Chambers returned to athletics last June after being banned following a positive test for the steroid THG.

Under the terms of his return, he must use future track earnings to pay back any prize money he won while competing on steroids.

Seegobin said: "Personally, I think because we have so much money to pay back, if he can find another way to make a living he will."

David Tossell, director of public affairs for NFL international, told BBC Sport that Chambers had impressed coaches during the training camp in Cologne at the start of November.

"Dwain did better than they had expected - he was tougher than they thought," Tossell said.

"He is very determined and that's impressed us. And he has a vital quality that you can't coach - raw speed."

But he added that it would be very difficult for Chambers to forge a career in NFL Europe, let alone the NFL proper.

"There are huge odds against him making it and we made sure he understood that," Tossell said.
