Nation laments Becks break

A round-up of the UK's sporting headlines

BBC Sport Online takes a look at the story dominating Thursday's back pages in England, Spain and Argentina - the news that David Beckham's season may be over.

England

The Daily Express' back-page headline 'All over' adequately sums up national press reaction to the foot injury that has rocked David Beckham's season.

Beckham suffered a broken left foot during Manchester United's win over Deportivo La Coruna on Wednesday, ruling him out for up to eight weeks.

And with England's opening World Cup fixture taking place within that time frame, the nation's football press is in a state of panic.

The Daily Mail leads with 'Nightmare' - summing up England's World Cup's hopes if their captain does not make it to Korea and Japan.

The broadsheets do not play down the seriousness of the England captain's injury either, with the Guardian's headline 'Beckham faces end of the world'.

Argentina

The fact that the England captain's injury was inflicted by an Argentine is an irony noted by several of the country's newspapers.

Argentina, who were the opponents when Beckham was sent off at the last World Cup, are in England's group in Japan.

'Don't cry for me, England' screams a headline on the Buenos Aires daily sports newspaper Ole.

A sub-headline reads: 'The Spice Boy has a foot out of the World Cup, the Argentine Duscher hit him and fractured his toe.'

La Nacion describes Pedro Duscher's tackle as "violent", noting: "A fracture could leave Beckham out of the World Cup.

"The English player broke a toe in his left foot after a violent tackle by Argentine Duscher."

Spain

Spain's major daily sports newspaper Marca only makes reference to Beckham's injury in a match report of Deportivo's 3-2 defeat to Manchester United.

The paper points out that this is second time in a week that the United midfielder suffered a hard tackle - no mention of a foul - from a Deportivo player, after a bad challenge by Diego Tristan in the first leg.

ABC also makes reference to Diego Tristan's tackle eight days ago, pointing out that the injury is a major blow to Man Utd's Champions League hopes.
