Sports Talk: How bright is Wales' future?

Wales debutant Robert Earnshaw admitted scoring the winner against Germany felt like "a dream".

The Cardiff striker grabbed the only goal 12 seconds into the second half when he latched on to a John Hartson flick-on and finished with aplomb past Oliver Kahn.

The victory will give great hope to Wales as they build towards the start of their Euro 2004 qualifying campaign in the autumn.

Earnshaw told BBC Wales: "I can't believe it, I don't really know what to say, it's just a dream and there's no words for it. It's amazing really."

I don't think this is a drama
Germany coach Rudi Voller
Wales captain Gary Speed, the only member of tonight's side who was part of the Wales team which beat reigning world champions Germany in 1991, added: "It was a great performance tonight.

"We took our chance and defended great when we had to.

"It's not as much of a surprise to us as it might be to some people because we know we have been progressing."

Germnay coach Rudi Voller, meanwhile, played down the signifcance of the defeat despite it coming just a few weks before the World Cup.

Voller, who played in the last German side to lose in Cardiff, blamed a lackadaisical approach from his players for the defeat.

"We started to play well too late in the game and we were too friendly and uncommitted," he said.

"Some of the players were coming back from injury and we could see they were not in great form.

"It would have been better to have put in a good performance but I don't think this is a drama."
