Away day victories in Premier Cup
Kurt Nogan bagged two goals in each half for Cardiff in Tuesday night's game at Penydarren Park against Merthyr.
The first came after a blunder by Martyrs sweeper Adrian Needs who passed the ball straight to Cardiff's Danny Hill. Hill slipped it through to Nogan who made no mistake. Nogan's second followed an intricate move involving midfield substitute Jason Fowler.
It was a welcome return for Fowler, who has been out since September with a thyroid problem. But there was better news for Merthyr off the field with the news that John Lewis has returned to Penydarren Park. Lewis was manager of Llanelli earlier in the season and comes back as assistant to Keith Walker. "I never really wanted to leave and I think this is Wales' biggest non-league club," Lewis said. "And if we do as we did tonight then we will start to climb the league table. Merthyr are currently 18th in the Dr Martens Lague, only six points off the bottom. "We passed the ball well and created chances," Lewis explained. League of Wales leaders Barry Town proved too strong for Connah's Quay Nomads. A first-half goal from Andy Yorke and one just after the hour from Jamie Jenkins were enough. And two of the League of Wales' best sides this season were in action at a cold Carmarthen. A Shaun Chapple own goal gave Aberystwyth the win, although Richard Parker and Brian Nicholas both went close twice for the home side. Tuesday's results Group A Carmarthen 0-1 Aberystwyth Group B Merthyr 0-2 Cardiff Group C Connah's Quay Nomads 0-2 Barry |
