Saudis grab golden victory
Mohammed Nour of Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia successfully defended their Arab Cup title, beating Bahrain 1-0 in the final in Kuwait City thanks to a golden goal from midfielder Mohammed Nour.

The Saudis retained the sporadically contested trophy despite having had their Dutch coach Gerard van der Lem hospitalised two days earlier after suffering a heart attack.

Mohammed Nour, one of only a handful of the Saudi's World Cup squad involved, clinched the title with a header in the third minute of sudden death extra-time.

The Saudis won the previous tournament in 1998, when they beat Qatar 3-1 in Qatar, and, prior to a six-year hiatus, were beaten finalists in 1992 when Egypt lifted both the Arab Cup and Pan-Arab Games titles in a dual competition.

By reaching the 2002 final Bahrain added another feather to the cap of German coach Wolfgang Sidka, who also guided the Gulf island to the final round of 2002 World Cup qualifying.

Kuwait, meanwhile continue to disappoint. Their failure to get through the group phase despite having home advantage, costing coach Radojko Avramovic his job just ten months after taking over from Berti Vogts.
