JOHN SURTEES [Motor Racing]
The only man to have been world champion on two wheels as well as four, in 1959 Surtees celebrated his second world motorcycling championship. He then turned his back on bikes and went on to win the F1 title with Ferrari in 1964.

DAVID BROOME [Show Jumping]
Broome's impressive show jumping career has spanned more than 40 years and it was his performance in the Rome Olympics in 1960 that won him a bronze medal and the viewers' vote.
1961 Winner
STIRLING MOSS [Motor Racing]
Universally acknowledged as the best racing driver never to win the world championship, he won 16 Grand Prix. In 1961 Moss finished second in the world championship despite a great win in the German Grand Prix.

ANITA LONSBROUGH [Swimming]
One of only 13 women to be voted Sports Personality of the Year, Lonsbrough was the first. Having swum to victory in the 200m breaststroke in the 1960 Olympic Games, she became the first swimmer to receive an MBE.
