Swimming teacher named unsung hero

Milton Keynes swimming instructor Doreen Adcock has won the Sports Unsung Hero award at the 2009 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The 72-year-old has taught over 13,000 people to swim in the town over the last 35 years.

Doreen, who also has a Facebook page dedicated to her, has helped three generations of people to swim in the local area.

Entire families have been taught to swim by her over the years.

Olympic swimming champion Rebecca Adlington and snooker legend Jimmy White were on hand to give the award to Adcock.

Adcock said: "The children I teach and the adults with handicaps, to see them in their own surroundings and to know I will have produced a good little swimmer gives me such a warm feeling inside me. Thank you."
