Phelps powers to first win Great Britain pick up a first medal silver in the diving on an opening day overshadowed by the ongoing furore of Greek sprinters Kostas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou and their missed drugs test. But the focus was on the swimming pool where Michael Phelps and rival Ian Thorpe begin their gold rushes with a win apiece.

Brits endure bad day A miserable day for Team GB sees Nicole Cooke miss out on the medals in cycling's road race Tim Henman crash out of the tennis at the first hurdle and Sarah Price leave the pool in tears. Elsewhere Michael Phelps' chances of eight golds are destroyed by South Africa's world record swim in the 4x100m free.

Thorpe lights up the pool Ian Thorpe wins what is dubbed the 'Race of the Century' with an Olympic record in the 200m freestyle beating defending champion Pieter van den Hoogenband and Michael Phelps. And after a poor return on Sunday Great Britain enjoy a better reward as the team's sailors and threeday eventers prosper.

Phelps doublesup in 60 minutes After four days of action swimmer Stephen Parry doubles Great Britain's medal haul with a bronze in the 200m butterfly. But as ever all eyes are on the phenomenon that is Michael Phelps who wins the 200m fly before taking to the water an hour later to help himself and the USA to another gold in the 4x200m freestyle.

A further brace of bronze medals from canoeist Helen Reeves and archer Alison Williamson takes Team GB's total haul to six.

Golden dayfor Brit sailors Team GB claim a first gold of the Games when Shirley Robertson Sarah Webb and Sarah Ayton wrap up victory in the Yngling class. And Britain goes badminton barmy as Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson take silver after a dingdong mixed doubles final. While Britain celebrates a first gold Michael Phelps wins a fourth.

Hoy shinesfor Britain Like buses Britain waits almost a week for gold and then within 24 hours another comes along as cyclist Chris Hoy powers to victory in the 1km time trial. The athletics meet starts but all eyes remain on the pool and on one man in particular as United States hero Michael Phelps makes it five golds.

Pinsents crewlead gold rush Team GB enjoy their best Olympic day in years as they scoop four golds on top of the Yngling sailing crew being confirmed as winners. Matthew Pinsent's coxless four sailor Ben Ainslie and cyclist Bradley Wiggins win titles and Leslie Law's eventing silver is upgraded. Michael Phelps takes his personal tally to six on swimming's final day.

Radcliffe run ragged on road Instead of finishing the marathon with a muchanticipated gold medal around her neck Paula Radcliffe's hopes end in tears on the roadside. Back in the Olympic Stadium Justin Gatlin takes the honours in the blueriband 100m beating Francis Obikwelu and Maurice Greene while Sweden's Christian Olsson leaps to the triple jump title.

Holmes lightsup track Following Paula Radcliffe's marathon failure Kelly Holmes takes the mantle of Britain's golden girl with victory in the 800m having come round the outside with an awesome late burst for a memorable win. Team GB's cyclists add another medal to their collection with silver in the 4000m team pursuit behind a classy Australian outfit.

El Guerrouj sprints to gold In athletics Hicham El Guerrouj ends his Olympic hoodoo with an emotional win in the 1500m after missing out in Atlanta and Sydney and Yelena Isinbayeva wins pole vault gold with a new world record. There is no decathlon medal for Britain's Dean Macey but boxer Amir Khan and and Team GB's 49er sailors are assured gongs.

Wiggins claims clean sweep Cyclist Bradley Wiggins becomes Britain's most successful Olympian in a single Games since 1964 adding a madison bronze with Rob Hayles to his individual pursuit gold and team pursuit silver. Team GB bag bronze in sailing's mistral class and Greece's Fani Halkia sends the home crowd wild with victory in the 400m hurdles.

Crowd mars sprint showdown The 200m is delayed as locals hail disgraced absent sprinter Kostas Kenteris before Shawn Crawford leads home an American 123. Britain's Kelly Holmes begins her bid for 1500m gold and Paula Radcliffe enters the 10000m. Elsewhere sailors Chris Draper and Simon Hiscocks win bronze in the 49er class.

Radcliffe run out of 10000m Paula Radcliffe misses out on a second medal chance in the 10000m in a race won by Xing Huina. It is China's second athletics gold after Xiang Liu wins their first ever athletics title in the 110m hurdles. Britain are buoyed by another Amir Khan win in the boxing and Georgina Harland's againsttheodds modern pentathlon bronze.

Athletics bids dramatic farwell An absorbing end to the athletics meeting sees Kelly Holmes add the 1500m gold to her 800m title. Hicham El Guerrouj follows suit by landing an historic double of his own when he wins the 5000m but the most dramatic race sees Britian beat USA in the 4x100m relay. Argentina also celebrate a double in the men's basketball and football.

Khan closes Games with a silver Cuba's Mario Kindelan ends Amir Khan's dreams of winning gold in the ring but the 17yearold Briton's silver assures him of hero status. There is a wealth of drama including a fight in the wrestling. And in the marathon leader Vanderlei de Lima is pushed into the crowd by a protestor before Stefano Baldini passes him to win.
