As the week counted down to the awards show, Gary Lineker presented five special programmes profiling all the winners since the first staging of the event in 1954.
Simply the Best - Sports Personality' is highlighting a group of award winners at a time, beginning with the decade 1994-2002 and ending with 1954-1963.
Phone and interactive TV voting opened at the start of each show, and the five most popular winners will be announced at the start of Sunday's awards programme, with the lines closing for the final time at 2100 GMT.
The show itself promises to be the most exciting yet, gathering together an array of sporting talent from around the world.
More than 30 past Sports Personalities of the Year are expected to be present, including Paul Gascoigne, Sebastian Coe and the first ever winner, Sir Chris Chataway.
There will be a host of awards, in addition to the Golden Personality, including the coveted 2003 honour.
And a special 'Team of the Decades' will be honoured from the 45 previous recipients of the annual trophy.
A member from each of the winning teams of the year will vote to decide the overall winner.
