In 1993 Christie took the 100m gold at the World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart. The year before he had become the oldest man ever to win Olympic sprint gold and he remains one of Britain's most famous track and field stars of all time.

DAMON HILL [Motor Racing]
In a dramatic climax to the Formula One drivers championship, Hill finished second to his great rival Michael Schumacher. The collision during the Australian Grand Prix handed the German his first title - but the British public stayed behind Hill.

JONATHAN EDWARDS [Athletics]
Edwards raised the British public's awareness of triple jump to a new level in 1995. He won the European Cup and the World Championship with two world record leaps of more than 18m. He went on to claim Olympic gold in Sydney in 2000.
1996 Winner
DAMON HILL [Motor Racing]
Williams driver Hill succeeded where he had failed in the previous two years by clinching the Formula One Drivers Championship. Hill won the final Grand Prix of the season in Japan to emulate his father, Graham, by claiming the world title.
1997 Winner
GREG RUSEDSKI [Tennis]
After almost 60 years Rusedski was the first British man to reach a Grand Slam singles final in the 1997 US Open Championship. His defeat by Pat Rafter did nothing to diminish the efforts of the Canadian-born tennis player in the eyes of BBC viewers.
