Alcott breaks new ground
Chemmy Alcott
Alcott has finished in the top 25 all season
British skier Chemmy Alcott claimed her best ever World Cup result when she finished 11th in the super-G at Lake Louise in Canada.

The race was won by Austrian Renate Goetschl, 0.51 seconds ahead of Michaela Dorfmeister and Hilde Gerg.

Alcott's performance capped a memorable weekend for the 21-year-old.

On Friday she became the first British women's skier for 15 years to score World Cup points when she finished 22nd in the downhill.

She repeated the feat in Saturday's second downhill, again finishing 22nd, before confirming her potential as a genuine all-rounder in Sunday's race.

"I am so pleased," said Alcott, who returns to Europe this week. "It has been a great weekend.

"It's a shame that it looks like that will be the last downhill for a while because I am really up for it.

"But I have so much more confidence in my skiing now and it really showed here I think."

These are great results for Chemmy. She has great potential
Coach Christian Schwaiger
Alcott believes she has benefited from training with Britain's top male skiers this summer.

"Mentally I feel so much more up for it," she said. "Even though my coach probably tells me 10 times a day that I can do it, I have never really felt totally confident.

"Now I feel like I can and today really proves it to me."

Christian Schwaiger, the head coach of the British team, praised Alcott's performances and believes she can follow the path set by Olympic bronze medallist Alain Baxter.

"These are great results for Chemmy," he said. "This is pretty much like it was for Alain three years ago, so she has great potential."

Goetschl, meanwhile, added to her third place in Saturday's second downhill.

The former World Cup overall champion finished well ahead of compatriot Dorfmeister and Germany's Gerg.

France's Carole Montillet, who won both downhills, failed in her attempt to match German Katja Seizinger's 1997 record of three consecutive wins, finishing eighth.
