Mind Games - Depression in Sport

Many fans find it hard to understand how a top-level sportsperson can suffer from depression.

Being well paid to live what many people would consider a dream, often means there is little sympathy or willingness to comprehend their plight.

But as Somerset cricket captain Marcus Trescothick explains in the latest edition of Inside Sport, the reality of depression means the dream can quickly unfold.

Speaking for the first time since he flew home from the Champions League Twenty20 in October after a recurrence of his stress-related illness, Trescothick describes what he was going through in India with an exclusive video diary.

And he tells Gabby Logan why he feels the trip was worthwhile and how it was a positive step after he cut short the Ashes tour in 2006.

The former England opener quit international cricket in 2008 because of anxiety attacks which he has suffered from since he was a child, but he is not the only top level sportsman to have encountered mental illness.

Trescothick is joined by former boxer Frank Bruno, Northern Irish footballer Neil Lennon and legendary All Black John Kirwan to discuss their battles against depression and to examine the myths and misconceptions that still surround mental illness.

Sporting spotlight falls on Sheffield

In this Inside Sport special, Gabby Logan highlights the achievements of the 10 contenders who will battle it out to become BBC Sports Personality Of The Year for 2009.

Famous faces from the world of sport and entertainment show their support for one of the contenders who have been nominated for the famous award which was won last year by multiple Olympic champion cyclist Sir Chris Hoy.

The event will be broadcast live from Sheffield on Sunday 13 December and in its 56-year history it has become one of Britain's most popular programmes.

Athlete Sir Christopher Chataway was the very first winner in 1954 and since then a whole host of world famous names have lifted the iconic trophy including Bobby Moore, Sir Henry Cooper, Virginia Wade, Sebastian Coe, Nigel Mansell, Sir Steve Redgrave, David Beckham, Dame Kelly Holmes and Joe Calzaghe.
