12 Elena Dementieva

DOB: 15.10.1981
Nationality: Russian
World Ranking: 14
Previous Wimbledon results:
2001 :: third round
2000 :: first round
1999 :: first round
1998 :: n/a

The Russian came to prominence in 2000 when she reached the US Open semi-final and won a silver medal at the Sydney Olympics.

She is a baseline player with strong ground strokes and excels on hard courts.

After failing to make it past the first hurdle at Wimbledon in 1999 and 2000, she managed to make it to the third round last year.

Dementieva is a very good doubles player and won the German Open this year with partner Janette Husarova.

In singles, she fell victim to surprise of the tournament Clarisa Fernandez in the last 16 at the French Open.

The Russian is still only 21 and is likely to fancy her chances in the doubles at Wimbledon rather than the singles.
