4 Monica Seles

DOB: 02.12.1973
Nationality: American
World Ranking: 4
Previous Wimbledon results:
2001 :: did not play
2000 :: quarter-finals
1999 :: third round
1998 :: quarter-finals

Started the year well by reaching the semi-final at the Australian Open and ending Venus Williams' 24-match unbeaten streak in the process.

She followed that by reaching the final of the Pan-Pacific event in Tokyo but a foot injury has restricted her progress since.

The French Open brought a return to form and Seles was only stopped by world number one Venus Williams at the quarter-final stage.

A foot problem also caused her to miss Wimbledon last year although in truth, it has always been her least favourite Grand Slam.

She came closest to capturing the title - the only missing from her Grand Slam collection - 10 years ago when she put in a subdued performance in the final against Steffi Graf.
