Capriati out of Wimbledon
Jennifer Capriati
Capriati struggled with a shoulder injury

Jennifer Capriati's Wimbledon challenge is over for another year after she lost her quarter-final 6-3 6-2 to French ninth seed Amelie Mauresmo.

In a match plagued by the weather, Capriati failed to find any rhythm and also struggled with a shoulder injury which saw the trainer called on early in the second set.

And the American admitted after the match that the injury hampered her almost immediately.

"In the first game as soon as I tried to pass on my backhand I felt it, and it just got worse," said Capriati.

"I never really got into the match. The most important thing she did is serve unbelievable, but she did everything well.

"It's disappointing and it's a little bit of bad luck, I think, but I've got to hand it to her.

"She's never been as consistent as she was today - usually she can give you some opportunities."

The world number three regretted playing on in the sixth game when she dropped her serve as the rain began to fall.

"I probably should have stopped it and I could have," she said.

The repeated delays certainly disrupted Capriati's rhythm, but that could not take away from a superb performance by Mauresmo.

The ninth seed served heavily and played a surprisingly aggressive game, taking the initiative with some sharp volleying.

"I've never played better tennis than I did today," said Mauresmo. "I'm not used to playing this game, going to the net this often.

"I think I was coming to the net not necessarily just on the short balls, so maybe she was surprised.

"I feel good on the court and I like to be out there playing that kind of game."

And Capriati believes Mauresmo is in the kind of form that could trouble the top seeds.

"She has a pretty good chance if she plays like she did today," said the American.
