Kafelnikov joins fallen stars
Xavier Malisse
Malisse sprinted to victory in the third set

Fifth seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov became the latest big name to crash out of Wimbledon after losing in straight sets to 27th seed Xavier Malisse on Friday.

Belgian player Malisse inched the opening two sets 7-6 7-5 but then romped home in the third set, winning it 6-1 as his Russian opponent went down with barely a whimper.

Kafelnikov's exit followed hard on the heels of defeats for Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and another Russian, Marat Safin, in the men's championship.

Malisse, a 21-year-old who like many members of the ATP tour is based in Florida, will now be immediately tipped as a star of the future after this greatest triumph of his fledgling career.

He will play Greg Rusedksi in the next round after the British number two impressively beat fancied American Andy Roddick in straight sets 6-3 6-4 6-2.

George Bastl, the lucky loser who overcame seven times champion Pete Sampras in a five-set epic upset on Wednesday, found his luck had run out on Friday.

The unseeded Swiss was beaten 6-2 6-2 6-2 by Argentina's 28th seed David Nalbandia.

Australian wildcard Mark Philippoussis booked his place in the fourth round with a four-sets victory over Nicolas Kiefer.

Philippoussis recovered from dropping the opening set to power his way to a 3-6 6-3 6-4 6-2 win on Court Two.

The Australian, who is making a comeback after knee surgery, was joined in round three by 1996 champion Richard Krajicek.

The Dutchman, another of the big servers, saw off the challenge of Paradorn Srichaphan, Andre Agassi's conqueror, 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 6-2.
