Williams sees off British challenge
Venus Williams in action against Jane O'Donoghue
Venus demonstrated her superiority over O'Donoghue
Venus Williams blitzed her way past British teenager Jane O'Donoghue, pulverising the wildcard entry 6-1 6-1 in just 45 minutes.

The defending champion, who is 343 places above O'Donoghue in the rankings, conceded just 23 points on her way to victory.

To her credit, O'Donoghue tried to play aggressively and occasionally hit some stylish winners.

But there were too many unforced errors, allowing the number one seed to record an easy victory.

O'Donoghue said the experience of playing on Centre Court had given her a taste for the big occasion.

"Ten minutes before I went on court I had a lot of butterflies, which was understandable, but once I hit my first few balls I settled down," said the Wigan youngster.

"It's a place everybody wants to play and, now I've had a taste, I want more of it."

Williams paid tribute to her 19-year-old opponent, saying: "To be honest, she played very well.

Britain's Jane O'Donoghue
O'Donoghue had no answer to Williams' power

"I could see she had a gameplan. She came to play aggressively and take her opportunities.

"But I'm so comfortable on grass. I've had a lot more experience and that's what really counted.

"I'm used to a player coming out and playing 100% against me."

Williams added: "In order for her to make the breakthrough, she needs to continue the way she played today.

"I don't think she should be discouraged. She will definitely make the breakthrough if she keeps playing aggressive tennis."
