Rusedski cruises through
Greg Rusedski stoops to reach a forehand volley
Rusedski's all-round game was too strong for Melzer
Greg Rusedski beat Jurgen Melzer 6-1 6-4 7-5.

British number two Greg Rusedski moved smoothly into the second round at Wimbledon with a straight-sets win over Austria's Jurgen Melzer.

Rusedski raced through the first set for the loss of just one game and he made just one unforced error in the first two sets.

I was pleased with the way I was aggressive on my returns and passing shots

Melzer overcame his nerves in the second set, but one break was enough for Rusedski to take it 6-4.

In the third set Rusedski broke serve in the first game, but when Melzer broke back in the eighth game it looked like it was heading for a tie-break.

However, Rusedski broke the young Austrian again in the 11th game and served out for the match to win 6-1 6-4 7-5.

"I'm happy to be done in three sets and to have played so well," said Rusedski.

Melzer, a former junior Wimbledon champion, made little impact on the Rusedski serve.

But equally impressive was the Briton's form from the back of the court, particularly on the return.

"I was pleased with the way I was aggressive on my returns and passing shots," he said.

"That's what I have worked on. I have to put it on the line for two weeks and go for my shots."
