All the action as Roger Federer beats Jose Acasuso in the first round of the US Open.

Fourth set:

Federer takes the game and the match after Acasuso is forced to retire through injury. The Argentine damaged his back at the end of the third set and failed to recover.

Third set:

Federer delivers a thumping forehand to set up three set points. And, at the third time of asking, Federer clinches the set with another rasping forehand.

The fizzing backhands and textbook serves begin to flow from Federer once again after he finally overcame the Acasuso serve. He takes this service game easily and should now take the set.

Federer waltzes to another simple service hold. The question is - can he finally break the gutsy Acasuso serve?

A stylish service game gives Federer the advantage in the second set.

Federer fails to take advantage of Acasuso's eye problems, throwing away a crucial return game and allowing the Argentine to level the set.

Federer 3-2 Acasuso
Federer enjoys a comprehensive service hold to move 3-2 up in the second set. Acasuso is forced to see the physio after collecting some dust in his eye.

Federer knows he should be taking advantage of Acasuso's poor second serve but once again the Argentine holds out.

First set:

Federer 5-7 Acasuso
Federer survives two Acasuso set points but loses the third to capture the first set. Federer's body language is suddenly very defensive.

Federer 5-6 Acasuso
Some world class net play helps Federer overcome a slow start to his serve. He is still forced to endure three break points, however, and fails to hold out on the third, giving Acasuso a crucial break.

Federer goes for the instant winners in an attempt to break the Argentine but - so far - he has yet to find his range on his groundstrokes. At 30-30, however, he sends a backhand fizzing past Acasuso to set up a set point but Acasuso holds out.

Federer looks unbeatable on his serve and again wins his service game to love. Doubtless, he will be keen to break Acasuso in the next game.

Both players are serving impressively. Federer is averaging 76% of his first serves and Acasuso 71%. Despite a confident return game Federer fails to take advantage.

A seemingly effortless service game from the Wimbledon champion keeps Acasuso on his toes. Federer is anxious to improve on his US Open record as he has yet to go beyond the fourth round in this competition.

Federer thumps a 126mph serve past Acasuso as he cruises through his third service game, winning to love.

The Argentine, who possesses a lethal first serve, successfully defends an early break point opportunity. Federer loses the game but looks very relaxed.

Federer replies with an equally comprehensive service hold as both players vie to gain the early ascendancy.
