One of the bright young stars on the circuit, teenager Vera Zvonareva is fast making a name for herself.
The 18-year-old has already achieved what her much-hyped Russian compatriot Anna Kournikova has yet to do - win a title.
In April she won the Croatian Bol Ladies Open after beating Conchita Martinez Granados in the final.
But her biggest moment came at this year's French Open when she upset number three seed Venus Williams to reach her first ever Grand Slam quarter-final, before losing to fellow Russian Nadia Petrova.
She followed that with a fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon, before Williams gained sweet revenge for defeat in Paris.
If she can sustain her form, the talented baseliner, who has reached the last eight in five WTA tournaments this season, is a potential Grand Slam winner.
Her preparation for only her second visit to the US Open has not been ideal and she has only played one warm-up tournament due to an injury to her left elbow.
