It could be argued that Capriati has suffered most from the emergence of the Williams sisters in women's tennis, with the Floridian titleless since last year's Australian Open.
Since the beginning of the 2002 season, Capriati, regarded by many as one of only a handful of players capable of competing with the all-conquering sisters, has lost all seven meetings with Serena including three finals.
But while Capriati knows she will not face her fiercest rival in New York, with Williams sidelined by injury, the 27-year-old has had her own injury worries.
Capriati was forced out of the Acura Classic with a shoulder problem - but if she can maintain her form, she should be a danger in New York.
The American looked refreshed at Wimbledon, reaching the quarter-finals before putting up a fierce fight against Serena.
And Capriati can usually be counted on to produce her best tennis in her home country - and will be keen to add the US Open title to her three Grand Slam trophies.
