Spadea has managed to stay at around number 30 in the world after a superb start to the season saw him fly up the rankings.
World ranking: 32
US Open best:
4th round (1995, 1999)
2002: 2nd round
2001: 4th round
2000: 1st round
The American twice reached the semi-finals in Masters Series event - Indian Wells and Monte Carlo - in March and April.
The 28-year-old also made the semis in Memphis and, along with two other quarter-finals, has been impressively consistent.
It is all in stark contrast to the 2000 season - when he lost 21 straight matches.
Unfortunately, it remains the most notable element of Spadea's career, and it is doubtful whether he can change that at Flushing Meadows.
A solid baseliner, he is capable of prospering on hard courts and clay, but has not won three consecutive matches since Monaco four months ago.
