Gaudio is one of several Argentine players making an impact on the world's top 30, and like most of his compatriots is at his best on clay.
World ranking: 30
US Open best:
3rd round (2002)
2002: 3rd round
2001: 1st round
2000: 1st round
The 24-year-old does his best to avoid playing on other surfaces wherever possible and has had little success on hard courts or grass.
He made the trip to the United States in March for the early hard-court events and lost in the first round at both Indian Wells and Miami, before heading back to the clay circuit.
And Gaudio has had some success this year - reaching the semi-finals of the Hamburg Masters - without exactly taking the tour by storm.
It has been a relative disappointment when compared to last season, when he won back-to-back titles in Barcelona and Mallorca, beating Carlos Moya, Lleyton Hewitt, Albert Costa and Gustavo Kuerten along the way.
This season has not quite lived up to that standard and Guillermo Coria has rather stolen his thunder as the latest Argentine clay-court star.
