Gamewatch: Roddick v Malisse
All the action as fourth seed Andy Roddick defeats Xavier Malisse in the US Open.

Third set:

Malisse totally misses his smash at the net and hands Roddick the first point of the tie-break.

The American fires long to go to 1-1. Malisse is having better luck at the net and recovers with an ace to go 3-2 up. Malisse goes a mini-break ahead at 4-3.

The Belgian loses his advantage and Roddick has a match point at 6-5. Malisse cannot respond to a magnificent backhand and hands the American the match.

A brilliant lob by Malisse lands plum in the corner at 15-15. Roddick's forehand gets him back on track and he holds.

A good serving game from Malisse sees him hold and he guarantees himself at least a breaker.

Malisse displays some deft hand skills at the net and as Roddick seems to be losing his concentration he grabs two set points.

The American drops a short volley over the net to save one and Malisse dumps the service-return in to the net to go to deuce.

Malisse looks more disconsolate as the game slides to 30-30 but more unforced errors are creeping in to Roddick's game and he holds.

Malisse seems a bit more fired up as he moves in to strike two spectacular passing shots beyond Roddick.

The Belgian gets his first break point of the match but puts his service-return long to go back to deuce.

The American pops his forehand out of court but Malisse slams the ball in to the net for the second deuce.

Roddick's forehand lets him down to hand Malisse another break but he wins a rally which had both players diving around the court. Roddick survives, saving three break points.

Malisse just cannot seem to find the right shots and lets Roddick in at deuce.

This time Roddick shoots long and the Belgian serves an ace to hold.

Malisse takes a three-minute injury time out to treat his foot.

But it is business as usual back on court as Roddick powers to another game dropping just one point.

The Belgian hands Roddick a break point as he sloppily fires the ball in to the net but the American does the same to go to deuce.

Roddick roars on to another love service game as Malisse finds him impenetrable.

Roddick takes the first point with an ace but Malisse makes a rare venture to the net to reach 15-15.

The American moves quickly to clinch the second set with a neat volley over the net.

The Belgian easily holds his game but he is still a break down.

Roddick continues to move smoothly through the second set as he notches up his seventh love service game of the contest.

Play is held up as the referee decides that towels need to be brought out to dry up the lines.

Malisse makes some more unforced errors to hand Roddick two break points.

The Belgian is visibly annoyed as he slams the ball in to the net to hand the American a break. The situation is not helped by the fact that the mist is making the court damp and slippey.

The American serves up his third love game.

The players return to the court after a rain-break lasting just over an hour.

Malisse fires down some strong serves but he cannot back it up with his strokeplay and the game goes to deuce.

The Belgian has trouble putting his tactical ideas in to practice but he does manage to save a break point with an ace.

Some good work at the net and a fifth game sees Malisse hold.

There is no problem for the American as he coolly holds to love.

It is now Malisse's turn to fire down his third ace of the match and he comfortably holds without conceding any points.

Roddick continues to get easy points on his thundering serve and he gets his fourth love-service game of the match.

The American again overpowers the Belgian with his strong forehands and he grabs a break point, though he dumps his service return in to the net to go back to deuce.

Roddick misses his chances as Malisse hangs on to hold.

First set:

Roddick sends a 130mph ace right down the T for 15-0 and then he relies on a lucky net cord to move within two set-points which he seals with a stylish smash.

Malisse looks a little more control in the rallies and manages to hold.

More over-hitting from Malisse sees the 21-year-old American comfortably win another service game but this time it is to 15.

Roddick 4-2 Malisse
Malisse struggles to get in to the game but does show more signs of trying to get in to the net more.

The American knocks a return straight down the line to move to deuce but the Belgian smashes to take advantage and holds.

Roddick 4-1 Malisse
Another faultless service game from Roddick sees him surge on in confident mood.

Roddick 3-1 Malisse
There are noticeably longer rallies on the Malisse serve and it is no surprise that the American steals points to go to 30-30.

The Belgium lacks accuracy on his forehand cross-court shots and he hands Roddick a break point. The American hits it into the net for deuce but makes no mistake at the second time of asking.

Roddick 2-1 Malisse
Roddick fires down the first of his trademark aces to quickly move in to a 30-0 lead. Malisse stays back on the baseline and the American takes advantage to serve out to love again.

Roddick 1-1 Malisse
The Belgian follows suit, losing no points on his first service game.

Roddick 1-0 Malisse
After a seven-hour rain delay, the American starts in confident fashion winning his first service game to love.
