Slam beckons for Serena
Venus and Serena Williams
Serena now holds three of the four Grand Slam titles
Not content with a hat-trick of Major titles, Serena Williams immediately set her sights on the Grand Slam after beating older sister Venus in the final of the US Open.

Serena completely outclassed her sister at Flushing Meadows as she cruised to a 6-4 6-3 win, which followed successes at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

"My goal now is to go Down Under and win this tournament.

"It's a Serena Slam. I have to start over when I get to Australia."

But Serena added that she would be happy if Venus won in Australia as it is the only Slam to have eluded the pair.

"I am just elated, now. Thanks daddy and thanks mom and all my sisters too," she said after the match.

"Right now I am just so happy. My parents are the backbone of our family."

I think Serena was the best player in the whole tournament this year

Had Venus won the match she would have taken back the number one ranking in women's tennis.

But the nature of Serena's third straight victory over her sister in the last three Grand Slam finals only went to emphasise her position at the top of the tennis world.

"I really wanted to stay number one because I like it here and I knew that everything was on the line," said Serena.

Past matches between the pair have been notable for a high number of unforced errors.

And while Venus served 10 double faults, she put it down to the pressure her sister was putting on her serve.

I'm gonna have some fun next year, that's for sure
Serena Williams

"I think I served pretty well as far as first serves. I think she just returned really well.

"I did make a lot of errors and it makes it tough to win the match.

"I think Serena was the best player in the whole tournament this year. I have to give it to her for that.

"I just wasn't the better player today."

This time last year Venus had established herself as the undisputed number one in women's tennis after back-to-back wins at Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows.

Now Serena will begin the new year on the verge of a Grand Slam.

"I'm gonna have some fun next year, that's for sure," she said.
