Bhupathi claims more doubles glory
Max Mirnyi and Mahesh Bhupathi celebrate victory in the men's doubles

Third seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi won the US Open men's doubles title with a 6-3 3-6 6-4 victory over Czech pair Jiri Novak and Radek Stepanek.

It was Bhupathi's seventh doubles success at a Major but his first in partnership with Belarussian Mirnyi.

After dropping the second set, Bhupathi and Mirnyi broke the Czechs to take a 3-1 lead in the third.

Novak and Stepanek broke straight back after a controversial line call which tournament referee Brian Earley refused to overrule.

But Stepanek was broken to love at 4-5, giving Mirnyi and Bhupathi victory in 96 minutes.

"I have to thank Max. He had a tough week playing in the singles and doubles but he stuck it out with me," said Bhupathi.

Mirnyi and Bhupathi teamed up in April after the Indian ended his long-time partnership with compatriot Leander Paes.

Bhupathi and Paes won three men's Grand Slam doubles titles and Mirnyi won the US Open event with Lleyton Hewitt two years ago.

Family affair

American Mike Bryan got the better of his identical twin brother Bob as he teamed up with Lisa Raymond to win the mixed doubles title.

The second seeds triumphed 7-6 7-6 against Bob Bryan and Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik in a match of two tiebreaks.

The match went with serve throughout, with Bryan and Raymond taking the first tiebreak 11-9 and the second 7-1.

Mike Bryan admitted afterwards that he owed his first Grand Slam success to his brother for arranging for him to play with Raymond.

"My brother signed me up with her. He was over here, I guess just fishing around for partners. He grabbed Lisa for me. I was so happy," he said.

"In mixed doubles, it comes down more to the woman. They're hitting most of the balls. Lisa's number one in the world, so that's why she wins many of these."

Russia's Elena Dementieva and Slovakian Janette Husarova will face Spain's Virginia Ruano-Pascual and Argentina's Paola Suarez in the women's doubles final on Sunday.
