Jennifer Capriati hits a return to compatriot Meghann Shaughnessy
Capriati will play Amy Frazier in the fourth round

Third seed Jennifer Capriati earned the final fourth-round berth at the US Open with a 6-2 6-2 trouncing of fellow American Meghann Shaughnessy.

The Australian Open champion needed just 56 minutes to advance, producing 17 winners and breaking 30th seed Shaughnessy's serve four times.

Capriati has conceded just 10 games in three matches so far at Flushing Meadows as she chases her second major of the year.

"It's only going to get tougher," she said aftewards.

Her fourth-round opponent will be unseeded compatriot Amy Frazier, who defeated 16th-seeded Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva 3-6 6-2 6-2.

Chanda Rubin
Rubin must now play Venus Williams

Defending champion Venus Williams also made confortable progress, crushing Martina Muller of Germany 6-1 6-2.

The number two seed, who has lost just six games in her first three matches, took just 41 minutes to book a place in the fourth round.

Williams will now face compatriot Chanda Rubin, who won another all-American clash against Lisa Raymond in the third round.

Rubin, who has beaten Serena Williams this year, won a tight match 7-6 6-4 against the experienced Raymond.

Seventh seed Kim Clijsters also had a three-set battle as she made her way into the fourth round.

Clijsters initially struggled with the hard-hitting of Vera Zvonareva and lost the first set 6-1.

But the Belgian battled back to take the second set and broke twice early in the third.

Although the Russian broke straight back, Clijsters held on for a 1-6 7-5 6-4 victory.

She will now play tenth seed Amelie Mauresmo, who had a comfortable 6-1 6-4 victory over Patty Schynder of Switzerland.
