Top seeds through
Former Wimbledon semi-finalist Justine Henin
Justine Henin had few problems in her first match

Lindsay Davenport, Jelena Dokic and Justine Henin all eased into the second round of the women's championship.

But it was another early exit for Anna Kournikova, who won just three games in her match against qualifier Angelique Widjaja of Indonesia.

Eighth seed Henin was first through, beating American Samantha Reeves 6-1 6-2 in the opening match on the Arthur Ashe Court.

Belgian Henin showed little signs of the finger fracture that hampered her build-up to the year's final grand slam event with some tough groundstrokes.

Henin's one-handed backhand was in full flow as Reeves struggled to come up with the shots to put up any form of challenge.

Henin next plays Zimbabwe's Cara Black, who beat Argentine player Maria Emilia Salerni 6-3 6-7 (8-10) 6-4.

Fourth seed Davenport made it into round two, thanks to a 6-2 6-1 triumph over Denmark's Eva Dyrberg.

The 26-year-old former champion, who is coming back to the game after undergoing knee surgery in January, took just 41 minutes to tie up the win.

"I feel really, really good," said the American, who was a runner-up at the warm-up tournament in New Haven last week.

"I felt like last week I made huge strides in pretty much every aspect of my game and felt like I started to do things better," added Davenport, who now faces Petra Mandula.

Meanwhile, another former champion, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, suffered a first round exit.

The veteran Spaniard was beaten 6-3 6-1 by Marion Bartoli of France.

Fifth seed Dokic made light work of her first round, beating Greta Arn of Germany 6-2 6-2 in just 51 minutes.

Kournikova's 2002 Grand Slam misery continued as she kept up her record of losing in the first round of each of the four majors.

Her opponent Widjaja broke once to take the first set and then capitalised on Kournikova's increasingly wayward shots to cruise through the second set.

Kournikova had drawn a huge crowd to watch her match but she was jeered as she left the court.

Anne Kremer became the first seeded casualty of this year's event.

The 19th seed from Luxembourg was beaten 7-6 (7/3) 6-2 by Russian qualifier Svetlana Kuznetsov.

In other results, 12th seed Elena Dementieva of Russia - a semi-finalist at the US Open two years ago - defeated Saori Obata of Japan 6-2 6-4 despite 39 unforced errors.

Fifteenth seed Anastasia Myskina of Russia downed Spain's Marta Marrero 4-6 6-4 6-0.

Daja Bedanova of the Czech Republic, the 20th seed, was untroubled as she disposed of Russian Alina Jidkova 6-1 6-3

Former French Open champion and 24th seed Iva Majoli of Croatia beat American teenager Ashley Harkleroad 6-3 6-2.

And 27th seed Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand battled past Germany's Barbara Rittner, winning 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 6-2.
