Third set

Henin-Hardenne earns three match points when Williams makes an error off the return. She only needs one and when Williams sends another return wide Henin-Hardenne reacts with delight as she sets up an all-Belgian final.

The nerves attack Williams now and she delivers a fifth double fault of the match. The top seed steps up the power to see off two break points but Henin-Hardenne engineers a third. Williams sends a forehand well wide to concede the break. Can Henin-Hardenne hold her nerve?

Not even the break of serve can settle Williams and her errors combined with a scrambled pass from Henin-Hardenne give the Belgian a break-back point. Though she cannot take that one, she earns another and takes it with a stunning overhead.

The Belgian suddenly falters at 40-15 and allows the top seed to force break point. Williams goes long with a forehand - and the crowd whistle their disapproval as she questions the call. She has another chance, but dumps a simple forehand into the net for her 46th unforced error. She finally takes a third and will serve for the set.
