12. Meghann Shaughnessy
Has made steady progress over the last three seasons - finishing with a career-high ranking on each occasion. She lost to eventual champion Jennifer Capriati in the fourth round here last year, but even that was a step in the right direction - the first time she'd reached that stage of a Grand Slam. An equally effective doubles player, Shaughnessy must iron out her inconsistencies. She is strong and resilient with an all-court game, but this year has made a habit of losing to lower-ranked players.
