6. Monica Seles
Started the year well by reaching the semi-final at the Australian Open and ending Venus Williams' 24-match unbeaten streak in the process. She followed that by reaching the final of the Pan-Pacific event in Tokyo but a foot injury has restricted her progress since. Champion at Roland Garros three years in a row from 1990 to 1992, Seles' best showing since was to reach the final in 1998 - but on the nine occasions she has played, she has reached the quarter-finals at least. Currently ranked fifth in the world, her best years may be behind her, but she is still a force and capable of challenging this year.
