26. Ai Sugiyama
Ai Sugiyama

DOB: 05.07.1975
Nationality: Japanese
World Ranking: 29
Previous French Open results:
2001 :: first round
2000 :: fourth round
1999 :: second round
1998 :: second round

Sugiyama has regularly been in or around the women's top 20 for six or seven seasons now but has rarely troubled the world's elite.

She has made her mark intermittently, beating Martina Hingis in the second round of the 1996 Olympic Games and winning three WTA singles titles.

Her exquisite racket handling means she has spent much of her time playing doubles, where she was ranked number one last season.

Her finest moments came when she won the ladies doubles at the US Open in 2000 and the mixed doubles the previous year.
