20. Patty Schnyder
Patty Schnyder

DOB: 14.12.1978
Nationality: Swiss
World Ranking: 23
Previous French Open results:
2001 :: second round
2000 :: first round
1999 :: third round
1998 :: quarter-final

Schnyder powered her way up 634 places in the world rankings back in 1995 and was considered one of tennis' brightest stars.

However, her alliance with German faith healer Rainer Harnecker, who among other things recommended she drink massive doses of orange juice, stalled her career.

Happily, she is steadily making a comeback and in Charleston this year defeated Jennifer Capriati, Serena Williams, and Amelie Mauresmo en route to the final before falling to 1997 Roland Garros winner Iva Majoli.

She is, at times, overwhelmed by the sort of power tennis which has crept into the women's game in recent years but the left-hander is nonetheless one of the game's most naturally gifted exponents.
