Serena's Cameroon caper

Serena Williams unveiled her latest fashion creation during her first round victory over Martina Sucha on Wednesday.

But for once she didn't design it herself.

Serena has been persuaded to wear a variation of the Cameroon World Cup Kit by her clothing sponsors, who also sponsor the African team.

"Us Americans aren't really into soccer, but I've been watching a lot of it lately," she said after enjoying a comfortable 6-3 6-0 win over her Slovakian opponent.

Serena has no visible links with the Cameroon team, outside her clothing sponsor, but she did witness their victory in the 2000 Olympics.

"I saw them win the Olympics when I was in Sydney so I'm supporting them," she explained.

"I don't know any of the players as such, but I did meet several of them and we swapped pins (badges). I am an avid, neurotic pin collector."

The kit is highlighted by illuminous yellow knee-length socks, bright green and yellow shoes and a similar coloured sleeveless top.

Sister Venus, who also attends Fashion College in Florida, gave the kit her thumbs up.

"She said it was really nice and really cute," insisted Serena.

"I think she wishes she had a team she could support in the World Cup."

Serena has obviously been doing her homework in preparation for supporting her new team.

"I was reading an article where it says that Cameroon is everyone's favourite team, apart from their home country.

"If you're supporting England, a lot of people still have this love for Cameroon because they're always fighting for every match. They're the best African team."

Serena admits that she still has a lot to learn about her new sport.

"I'll watch them on TV if I am awake, but it's on a bit too early in the morning for me. Obviously I am American so I would like to see them do well too."

Serena was refused her request to put the number 26 (the day she was born) on the back of her shirt.

"I don't think they wanted me to wear a number on the dress. 26 is my lucky number, so I call my bookie sometimes."
